* Saturday: Nikki Talley and Pick Your Switch at 8pm

She’s been described as “country, folk, sultry, goth, and that hippie-chick from the South but not one of these adjectives even comes close to nailing down the heart and soul of this smokin’ song-writer singing her way out of the Blue Ridge mountains of Western North Carolina. Nikki Talley ascends from a line of banjo playing, ballad singing mountain women with the same gusto for their music as they have for their men and whiskey.
Mastering both guitar and banjo and a variety of other instruments she manages to tame upon touch, kicking out lyrics that makes the heart weep, and belting out those songs with the passion of a circuit preacher at a tent revival, Nikki spent the early days of her career busking on the boardwalks and piers of Key West, following the northern star to the streets and cafes of Toronto, hitting venues at hole-in-the-wall bars and lounges along the way.

During these early years, and reflective of Nikki’s determination and ingenuity, and in between her writing, playing, singing and performing, Nikki’s investment in a sixteen-track digital recorder along with a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council turned the multi-talented songstress into the producer of her first CD Brother. She has had 3 releases to date. Due to the success of To Be A Bird (which placed #27 on WNCW’S prestigious Top 100 Releases of 2008), she has toured the southeast & gained many new fans.

Upon her return to Asheville in 2004, competing against over three hundred equally talented musicians, Nikki’s growth and maturity as a lyricist and performer was recognized by industry peers when she easily garnered Asheville’s coveted Carolina Star Award.

Trying to pin down Nikki’s style, critics and reviewers alike have compared her to an early Liz Phair and Gillian Welch, but to leave the comparisons there would be doing a disservice to her fiery stage performance, hauntingly seductive and raw gritty lyrics, lifted by a voice that harkens back to the Appalachian roots from which she was born, and shores up on the edges of contemporary southern rock, country, blues, and jazz that has her audiences stomping and clapping for more.

Pick Your Switch
Award winning Songwriter and performer Paul Edelman-The jangling Sparrow, fronts his red hot rock trio, Pick Your Switch!

Already being acclaimed by fans and peers throughout the region for their raw and explosive live shows.

Edelman, originally from Philadelphia, left as one of the most respected artists in his genre. Paul has shared the stage with some of Americana’s biggest acts including The BottleRockets, James McMurtry, Robert Earl Kean, Niko Case, Big Sandy, The Sadies , Slim Cessna, Scott Miller among many others . He has worked with music legends like Jimmy Johnson, founder of Muscle Shoals studio, Nashville session staple drummer Martin Parker (Rickky Skaggs, Patti Loveless) and keyboardist Steve Fordham (Mavis Staples). Upon moving to North Carolina he grabbed winner of the 2009 Flat Rock Music Festival songwriter competition. Now brings his award winning, lyrically driven song crafting and journeyman performances to a ferocious Telecaster.
